In general you should note that small scratches, wrinkles and insect bites on the leather should not be considered faults but the signature of nature. The quality of raw hides and tanning methods has a significant influence on the final appearence and looks of the leather. Cheaper leathers are often sprayed with a surface to hide faults og embossed to look like croco leather or any other pattern.
It is most important to stress that no leather sustains water. Hence it is always adviseable to wipe your bag with a soft cloth if you have been out into rainy conditions. Also you can use a leather protection spray to make the bag more sustainable to weather conditions.
Our specific leathers
[TEXAS] [TEXAS] is the neck piece from bull calfes, known as avancorpi. The wrinkles in the leather is the natural wrinkles from the animal and recognized by afficionados as a seal of quality. The amount of wrinkles are most distinctly near the neck and will be less visible the farther away from the neck you get. HANSSON solely uses leather from European animal, typical from Italy and France.
Many companies making products of apparently similar leather uses raw hides from Russia and Eastern Europe countries. These raw hides have a lower grade as they have many faults. This difference is a result of the upbrining of the animals. Bovine living under good conditions and a the right diet gives in the end a better raw material. HANSSON has made a choice - we want our [TEXAS] leather to be from best quality.
The tanning process of [TEXAS] leather from HANSSON is known as vegetable. This is the tanning process that is most gentle to nature. The fluids used in the process is among other extraction from bark and other natural ingredients.
[TEXAS] leather is coloured by hand to obtain the special effect which is visible in the brown colour especially. After colouring leather is hand polished to give the right shine.
[COLORADO] [COLORADO] is Italian calf leather. This leather is also vegetable tanned. The leather is from the sides og the animal. During the production process, the leather is being "tumbled". The leather is being processed in a large drum, that massages the leather to be more soft. This gives the leather another look as the grain is more visible and uniform.
Furthermore oil is added to the leather, which also is a reason for the softer touch. A positive sideeffect to this is that small scratches can be minimized - in some cases made almost invisible - just by massaging and rubbing gentle on the "damage".
[SIENA] [SIENA] is also a vegetable tanned calf leather like [TEXAS]. Leather raw materials is from India, who is the worlds largest manufacturer of leather.
[SIENA] is coloured in the normal way with a transperancy to still be able to see the natural looks of the leather.
[NATURAL] [NATURAL] is leather from oxes and is mostly imported from South America.
This leather is 100% natural top finish. Without any leather protection spray or other treatment, this leather will in very short time get patina from rain, light, natural grease from our hands etc.. The leather changes it's looks very fast. Even using a leather protection spray the character of this leather will change rapidly and get a cool and "worn" look which is the whole idea. If you want to make your product look more uniform, you can right away use a leather grease. We recommend leather grease from Collonil. Give the whole bag 2 - 3 treatments before using it and it will get darker and much more repellant to water stains, natural grease from you fingers etc..
